Chapter Twenty-Three

Eve took Gus with her to the beach. It wasn’t like being accompanied by a Dobermann, but he gave her confidence and he might diffuse the tension. The weather had cleared completely now and the schools were on Easter vacation, so people weren’t rushing home early. If Howard Green came to meet her, they wouldn’t be the only ones on the beach. All the same, she was glad she’d asked Robin to be in the vicinity. If Howard brought a gun he could isolate her quite easily unless they were amongst crowds.

She and Gus approached the shore via the woods and the heath, past a Dartford warbler. She tried to focus on it, bobbing between the gorse bushes, singing its scratchy song, but her heart rate ramped up all the same. What if this all went wrong? What if Robin got delayed?

A second later, she caught her breath, her stomach muscles clenching. Just beyond the sand dunes, up the coast and away from civilisation, Eve could see Howard Green’s gaunt figure: hands thrust into his trouser pockets, hair blown back by the wind, his jacket hanging loosely off this angular frame. He was further from the village than she’d suggested. At that distance he could hold a gun under his jacket and threaten her into going with him, with no one any the wiser.

She glanced around her. Where was Robin? A text came in.

I’m in the trees nearest the heath, just south of where Green’s standing. Once you reach him, I’ll start to walk north up the beach. He’ll know I’m there, and I’ll be ready to intervene; just ignore me.
